A typical image of meditating might be that you sit for hours in silence on your meditation cushion. But nothing could be further from the truth. You can meditate anytime, anywhere, and there is certainly no one-size-fits-all. These 3 meditation postures are worth giving a try.
What meditation postures are there?
There are countless different meditation postures. Start with the following 3 postures and find out which one suits you best.
1. Sitting meditation postures
You can meditate sitting down, lying down and even walking. Most people start with a seated meditation posture. Here are some options:
Sitting on a meditation cushion
There are several variations for sitting on a meditation cushion or other firm cushion. You can sit as you might know it from yoga, with your legs crossed on the floor. In the official lotus position, your knees do touch the ground or mat and your feet are in your groin. You can also sit this way in cross legged meditation, with your knees not touching the ground.
Sitting on your knees meditating
Another fine posture on a meditation cushion is sitting on your knees. This is especially fine if you are not comfortable sitting with your legs crossed. To do this, use a meditation cushion or other sturdy pillow. Place this on the floor and then sit on your knees, with your buttocks touching the cushion. This will give your knees a little more rest.
Sitting on a chair meditating
If your knees bother you or you prefer to have a support in your back, it may be nice to use a chair when meditating. To do this, sit well upright, with your back straight and preferably with your feet on the ground so that you make contact with the earth. You can use the backrest for support, but make sure you don't "hang" in the chair. So do keep sitting nicely upright, with your pelvis slightly forward. It may help to visualize that there is an invisible cable attached to you that holds your head up.
2. Reclining meditation postures
Some meditation exercises work best if you do them lying down. For example, this can be fine with an evening meditation or a body scan.

Meditating while lying down on a yoga mat
Lying on a yoga mat ensures that you remain alert and are less likely to fall asleep. You can place a pillow under your knees to help your leg and back muscles relax. You may want to put a blanket over yourself if it's a little colder on the floor.
Lying on your bed meditating
Do you like to do a meditation in the morning or in the evening before going to sleep? Then it's fine to meditate lying down in bed. in the evening it is nice to have already prepared for the night (showered, teeth brushed, pajamas on) so it is not a problem if you fall asleep during the meditation. falling asleep in the morning, on the other hand, is less pleasant; then it is better to sit upright in bed so that you do not fall asleep quickly.
3. Walking meditation
Did you know that you can even meditate while walking? Meditating doesn't have to mean sitting in silence on a cushion. You can also meditate in motion.
Meditating in Nature
A walking meditation is a nice way to completely quiet your mind. For example, take a shorter walk at your place in the park or a longer walk in the woods or on the beach. Drop your usual pace a little and consciously focus on your breathing.
Or turn on a nice guided meditation from the Meditation Moments app. This makes walking meditation even easier. All you have to do is put in your earbuds, put on headphones and enjoy nature.
What are the best meditation postures?
The best meditation posture? There isn't one. In fact, this is different for everyone. The most important thing is to keep your back straight, with a small natural curve in the lower back. This allows the energy to flow well down your spine. In this way you can relax and still meditate alertly. In addition, try to make sure that your knees are lower than your pelvis when in a sitting meditation posture, because otherwise your legs may tingle. And that in turn can distract you from meditating!
