How did you wake up today? Did you wake up with a smile, ready to start the day? Or did you get up in a hurry, worried about everything you still need to do today?

The first hours of the day determine how the rest of the day goes. If you have a bad start, there’s usually no way out. An affirmations morning is a great way to start your day on a positive note.

Morning affirmations help shift your mindset to positivity, power, love, self-confidence or any other state of mind that makes you feel good.

Morning affirmations

Everything we say or think is an affirmation. An affirmation can be positive as well as negative. How often have you started your day with one of the following affirmations?

  • ‘I am so tired.’
  • ‘I feel like there’s never enough time.’
  • ‘I really don’t feel like doing anything today.’
  • ‘I don’t feel well.’
  • ‘I feel so rushed.’
  • ‘There’s so much I still need to do.’

You’re probably not even aware of the fact that you’re using these ‘affirmations’. But while they are often subconscious thoughts, they can have just as much of an impact on your day as consciously chosen and positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations plant small seeds of positivity that help you create self-confidence, inner peace and self-love. Just imagine what happens when you start your day like that! So if you change the negative thoughts in the list above to:

  • 'I feel rested and energized.'
  • 'I have all the time in the world.'
  • 'This is going to be a wonderful day.'
  • 'I feel good.'
  • 'I feel calm and composed.'
  • 'I'm doing what I can.'

Do morning affirmations work?

You may be asking yourself: how can I say that I feel rested and energized while I actually feel very tired?

It’s a kind of fake it till you make it. The more you plant positive thoughts, i.e. those positive seeds, the more they will affect your day. If you repeat something often enough, you automatically start to believe in it. If you believe in something, you also start to act upon it. And that ultimately determines how your day - and your life – will turn out.

In addition, starting your day with an affirmations morning is like 'training' yourself to start your day positively. Eventually, it becomes a habit, something you’re used to, and it will feel very natural to have positive thoughts in the morning. Can you imagine the positive effects this will have?

Research on morning affirmations

Anything can happen in just one day, pleasant things as well as less pleasant things! Even if you have an affirmations morning you can still miss the train, have a deadline or get negative feedback.

If you have positive affirmations in the morning, you will be able to deal better with setbacks. You will experience less stress, anxiety or anger, and feel more resilient.

Research has shown that positive affirmations can help us better adapt to different circumstances. Positive affirmations have also been shown to help reduce the effects of stress.

Many studies on affirmations come from the self-affirmation theory (Steele, 1988). This theory says that affirmations change your outlook on life. Positive affirmations help to reduce negative thoughts and adopt an optimistic mindset.

A powerful affirmations morning

Affirmations can be repeated at any time of the day. When you're in the shower, on your bike or lying in bed. However, it’s good to schedule a set time for your affirmations, so it becomes a habit.

Morning affirmations are an incredibly powerful way to start your day off right. Setting a good intention in the morning is powerful and determines how you want the rest of the day to go.

We’ve all overslept at some point in time. Suddenly you wake up and realize you slept through the alarm. You rush to get dressed, quickly grab your bag and race out the door. You start the day in a hurry, you feel stressed and that feeling lingers through the rest of the day. When you start the day with peace, quiet and positivity you will experience the same effect, but then in a positive way.

The morning is the time of the day when you’re not totally active yet. You just had a night’s sleep and the chance that you’ll be distracted is minimal. In addition, in the morning you still have a lot of energy and enough willpower, at least if you’ve slept well. That’s why the morning is the perfect time to do your affirmations.

Affirmations morning routine

Create a pleasant affirmations morning routine for yourself. A morning routine is a collection of comfortable habits that you repeat every morning, often in the same order. Get up half an hour or an hour earlier than the time you usually wake up, so that you have a little time for yourself. This is especially nice if you tend to start your morning in a hurry or have kids to take care of.

Write down all the steps you can take to start your morning on a powerful, positive and happy note. In addition to using morning affirmations, you may also enjoy:

  • taking your time to wake up in bed;
  • reading a book;
  • meditating;
  • working out;
  • taking a walk in nature;
  • or writing down your thoughts.

This list can actually contain anything! Put your activities in an order that feels right for you. For example, after waking up you hang out in bed for a while, then do some yoga exercises and finish by meditating/listening to affirmations.

How to use morning affirmations?

If you really want to experience the effects of affirmations, the following two elements are important:

  • Affirmations only work when you take action. You can use affirmations to make changes in your life. But it will only work if you also take concrete steps. It doesn't work to simply use your affirmation, you also need to take action, experience success, and take concrete steps. One affirmation a day cannot eliminate all your problems, but it can give you the right mindset to take action.
  • Affirmations are extra powerful if you repeat them often. When you start using positive affirmations, you ultimately want to experience changes in how you behave, how you think and how you feel. Affirmations work on a conscious and subconscious level and are extra powerful when you expand your awareness. So make sure the morning affirmations resonate with you on a deep level. Don’t just read them, try to feel them. The spoken affirmations in the Meditation Moments app can help you along the way. These affirmations are accompanied by pleasant music (and a great beat) which will totally mesmerize you.

Mirror work

Louise Hay was the queen of affirmations. This American writer was known for her books on positivity. Louise developed her own method in which affirmations played a major role. According to her the most powerful affirmations are those you say out loud when you are in front of your mirror.

The mirror reflects back to you the feelings you have about yourself. It makes you immediately aware of where you are resisting and where you are flowing. Mirror work helps you to become much more aware of the words you use and the things you (subconsciously) say to yourself.

It can be difficult to look into the mirror and use affirmations while talking to yourself. However the more you do it, the easier it gets. You will be able to build self-confidence and to heal your life.

So, put on those headphones, listen to these powerful affirmations for a couple of minutes and repeat them out loud in front of the mirror. It will have an effect on you no matter what!

How you start your day is often how you live your life.

What are some good morning affirmations?

When it comes to morning affirmations, there is no one size fits all. Use your conscious when choosing affirmations that fit you and that you feel comfortable with. You can transform existing affirmations and put them into your own words.

Consciously choose the type of affirmations you want to use. Want to enjoy your day to the fullest? Have more energy? Experience more positivity? Adjust your affirmations accordingly during your affirmations morning.
