music to help with anxiety

Music is a fine tool for relaxing physically and mentally. It is a way to deal with anxiety and stress and feel calmer, happier and happier. These 3 types of music help reduce anxiety.

1. Classical music

According to studies by the Anxiety & Stress Center in Illinois, soothing tones in music create a calm environment for people with illness or stress. For example, classical and other soothing music lowers heart rate, blood pressure and the stress hormone cortisol in the body.

In addition, classical music increases the production of serotonin, which helps combat anxiety, panic and depression. Yet classical music is certainly not the only type of music that positively affects our health. It varies from person to person which music we like and is determined in part by our personal experiences.

The very styles of music we like help reduce anxiety. It makes no sense to push yourself to listen to classical music when you actually hate it. Then that is anything but relaxing! Only music that gives you positive feelings actually helps reduce anxiety or stress.

2. Binaural beats

Binaural beats is another type of music that can reduce stress and anxiety. Not everyone is yet familiar with the power of binaural beats. Binaural beats are created by playing two tones that differ by a few hertz. Because one tone is slightly higher or lower than the other, your brain makes a difference tone to this.

And this difference tone is what makes it special. This is because your brain - which vibrates at different frequencies - adapts to the difference tone. As a result, they evoke a certain state of mind, such as focus or deep relaxation:

  • Delta (0 - 4 hertz) - deep sleep, healing
  • Beta (4 - 8 hertz) - meditation, deep relaxation, creativity, trance
  • Alpha (8 - 14 hertz) - stress relieving, better learning
  • Beta (14 - 30 hertz) - focus, energy, clear
  • Gamma (30 - 100 hertz) - highly alert, high awareness, memory

This does require wearing headphones or earplugs so that you can hear one tone in your left and one tone in your right ear.

3. Sound healing

Other music to reduce anxiety is sound healing. With sound healing, the healing power of music is used to relax physically and mentally.

How exactly does it work? With sound healing, sound vibrations are used for their healing properties. You can think of tuning forks, gongs or singing bowls. When these are struck, vibrations are created that affect the body and mind.

Compare it to a small stone that you throw into the water. As soon as the stone hits the water, small waves appear around it and keep spreading. The musical vibrations are the waves and your body is the water through which they slowly move.

According to the book Vibrational Medicine by Dr. Richard Gerber, music frequencies can help to rebalance a body that has become unbalanced due to anxiety or stress, for example. Through sound healing, low frequencies of anxiety can be transformed into high frequencies of peace and confidence.

Music in the Meditation Moments app

In the Meditation Moments app, there are separate sections for binaural beats and sound healing. In addition, the app is full of music for different purposes, for example to sleep more soundly, focus better, or relax more. There are also (long) music tracks that can be used as background music during yoga and meditation, for example. All music is exclusive and specially composed by our team in our own studio and is therefore extra unique.
