At the beginning of 2022, we surveyed 7597 Meditation Moments app users. A large part of these respondents consisted of users who have fully incorporated meditation into their daily routine. Especially the morning is the time when they meditate because it gives them more peace of mind for the rest of the day. But how did they make meditation a habit? In this article you will read their best tips for meditating in the morning.
1. Meditate right when you wake up
"I start the day with Meditation Moments" is perhaps the most frequently used phrase from our survey. Many users meditate right when they wake up, just when they are still snuggled in their warm bed. As soon as they open their eyes they do a meditation, body scan or grab that morning's 'suggested meditation'. So they don't have to schedule an extra moment for this.
This way you start your day in peace and stillness, which you take with you for the rest of the day. Have you finished the 5, 10 or 15 minutes of meditation? Then the day really starts and you can shower, eat breakfast or continue the rest of your morning routine. By doing this every morning, every day, you'll eventually make it a habit.
2. Set your alarm earlier
You may be wondering, "Where do I get the time to meditate yet, I already have so little time in the morning. Again, respondents have a great answer: set your alarm earlier! A short meditation is better than no meditation at all. Set aside a few minutes in the morning for yourself. Then use this 'extra' time alone to meditate and start your day with the right intention. An extra tip from our users: start short, for example with 3 minutes. You will find that this will naturally become longer as you start to experience the benefits of meditation.
3. Set a daily reminder
A related tip is to set a daily meditation reminder. Many of the Meditation Moments users who have made meditation a habit had to get used to this at first. Therefore, our research revealed several times that users set a meditation reminder especially in the beginning, so that they would get a signal to meditate. At some point, it became such a habit that this was no longer necessary.
4. Meditate while showering or brushing your teeth
Don't feel like making special time to meditate or know you won't be able to anyway? Then make meditation part of the things you do anyway. You can probably be found in the bathroom every morning brushing your teeth or taking a shower. At those times, turn on a standard meditation, visualization or affirmation track, just nice and quiet in the background. This will provide enough positive energy for the rest of the day without taking up any extra time.
5. Schedule a set moment during breakfast
"Before breakfast I take a moment for myself with a meditation, which allows me to start the day in peace This tip also came up frequently in our research. Breakfast is something you do - most likely - every day. And you can easily link meditation to that, too.
Don't mindlessly scroll through social media, but put on a meditation while you're eating. This will make you eat a lot more consciously at the same time. You can also start or end your breakfast with a few minutes of silence. If you do this often enough, you teach yourself: breakfast is meditation. And then at some point it may even feel crazy if you've had breakfast without a meditation.
6. Meditate during your morning walk
To meditate, you don't have to sit still. You can do this very well while walking! And that is also what many respondents to our survey discovered. Especially those who are dog owners and have to go outside every day anyway. They turn this 'standard' walk into a meditative moment by putting on an affirmation or listening to soothing music.
On your next morning walk, bring headphones or earphones and put on a nice meditation or affirmation. And did you know that there are also special walking meditations? These are very deliberately made for listening to while walking.
7. Meditate on the go
Do you travel to work every morning, by car or public transportation? You can have a meditation moment there too. Of course it is not wise to close your eyes while driving, but affirmations work very well here. Are you traveling by bus or train? Even then you can put on affirmations or meditations. Put on your headphones or earphones and close your eyes if you like. This way you can shut yourself off completely from the outside world and the hustle and bustle around you for a few minutes.
